Build Websites with Claude + SiteSparq
A tutorial on creating professional websites through conversation
Understanding How This Works
When you ask Claude to create a website using SiteSparq, you'll see Claude use various tools to make it happen in real-time. These tools appear in your conversation as interactive boxes that show what's happening behind the scenes.
What You'll See
- Tool calls: Claude will use tools like "List Available Domains" or "Create Website" - these appear as expandable sections in your chat
- Real-time progress: You can watch as Claude checks domain availability, creates your site, and uploads your code
- Live results: Each tool gives Claude information that it uses for the next step
- No waiting: Your website goes live immediately - no previews or staging areas
- Continue buttons: Sometimes Claude will hit response limits while building your site and you'll see a "Continue" button - just click it and Claude will pick up exactly where it left off
What Kinds of Websites Can You Build?
Business & Professional
- Portfolio sites for creatives (photographers, designers, writers)
- Service business landing pages (consultants, agencies, freelancers)
- Restaurant/cafe sites with menus and contact info
- Professional profiles and resumes
Personal & Creative
- Personal blogs and journals
- Event websites (weddings, parties, conferences)
- Hobby sites (photography, travel, cooking, gaming)
- Artist showcases and galleries
Interactive & Functional
- Product landing pages with demos
- Simple e-commerce showcases
- Interactive portfolios with animations
- Educational content and tutorials
- Community or club websites
Don't See Your Type? These are just examples! Claude can build virtually any kind of website you can imagine. Whether it's a nonprofit organization, membership site, online magazine, recipe collection, travel journal, band website, or something completely unique - just describe what you need and Claude will make it happen.
How to Communicate What You Want
Just like working with a human designer, Claude needs clear direction. Describe the website you want in as much detail as possible:
Start with the Big Picture
- Purpose: "This is for my [business/hobby/project]"
- Audience: "My visitors will be [potential clients/friends/customers]"
- Feeling: "I want it to feel [professional/fun/elegant/edgy/warm]"
Then Get Specific About Content
- What pages do you need? (Home, About, Services, Contact, etc.)
- What's your main message or value proposition?
- Do you have existing content, images, or branding?
- Any specific features? (contact forms, galleries, video, etc.)
For Redesigns or Inspiration
- If you're redesigning an existing site, include its URL
- If you want to emulate another site's style, share that URL too
- Explain what you like about it and what you'd change
✅ Examples of Great Briefs
Detailed:
"I'm a wedding photographer and need a portfolio site that feels elegant and timeless. I want to showcase about 20 of my best photos in a gallery, have an about page that tells my story, and a contact page for bookings. The vibe should be romantic but not overly feminine since I shoot all types of couples. I'd love soft colors and clean typography."
Simple but clear:
"I run a local bakery and need a simple site with our menu, hours, and location. Warm and inviting feel, with photos of our best-selling items. Nothing fancy, just clear and appetizing."
❌ Requests That Make It Harder
- "Make me a website" (too vague)
- "I need the best website possible" (no direction)
- "Build something professional" (could mean anything)
The Magic Question
"Before we begin, do you have any questions?"
Always end your request with this question! It gives Claude the chance to ask for clarification, understand your audience better, confirm technical requirements, suggest improvements, and set proper expectations.
The Step-by-Step Process
Here's what you'll see Claude do:
1. Domain Setup
- What Claude does: Uses tools to find available domains and check if your preferred name is free
- What you see: Tool calls for "List Available Domains" and "Check Website Availability"
- Your part: Help Claude choose a memorable domain name that fits your project
2. Website Creation
- What Claude does: Creates your live website with the chosen domain
- What you see: "Create Website" tool that returns your website ID and URL
- Result: You get a working website URL immediately (though it's empty at first)
3. Content Gathering
- What Claude does: Finds appropriate images, videos, or other assets for your site
- What you see: "Procure Assets" tool calls if Claude is adding stock content
- Your part: Tell Claude if you have your own images/files to upload instead
4. Code Development & Upload
- What Claude does: Writes HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, then uploads it file by file
- What you see: Multiple "Upload Website Code" tool calls for each file
- Result: Your website builds up piece by piece until it's complete
5. Final Polish
- What Claude does: Checks the website status and makes any needed adjustments
- What you see: "Get Website Details" tool calls to verify everything is working
- Your part: Review your live site and request any changes
The Collaborative Process
What Happens Next
- Claude will ask clarifying questions if needed
- Claude will build and deploy your site live (no previews - straight to the real thing!)
- You'll get a working URL to view immediately
- You'll iterate together based on what you see
How to Request Changes
Be specific about what you want to adjust:
✅ Good Change Requests
- "The header text is too small - can you make it larger and bolder?"
- "I love the layout but can we change the blue to a forest green?"
- "The photo gallery is perfect, but can you add a contact form below it?"
- "This is great! Can you add a new 'Services' page with these three offerings..."
❌ Vague Change Requests
- "Make it better"
- "It needs more pop"
- "Something's not right"
Working with Your Own Content
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Copyright and Intellectual Property Notice
When uploading your own content (images, videos, text, audio, etc.), you must ensure you have the legal right to use all materials. This means owning the content or having explicit written permission from the copyright holder, purchasing proper licenses for any stock photos, music, or other media, and avoiding using copyrighted material without permission.
If you have your own photos/files: Tell Claude! Claude can set up a secure upload link so you can add your content directly. Large images are automatically compressed to optimize your website's loading speed.
If you need stock content: Claude can find and add appropriate placeholder images and content that matches your vision. If you find better images online, just share the URLs and Claude will use those instead.
Once you have your website: Continue to use Claude to edit and refine it - Claude can make updates, add new pages, change styling, and improve functionality over time.
Tips for Best Results
Be Honest About Your Needs
- "I'm not sure about colors - can you suggest a palette?"
- "I'm terrible at writing copy - can you help with that?"
- "I know exactly what I want it to look like..." (then describe it!)
- If Claude asks too many questions, you can always respond "Please try to answer the questions yourself as well and let me react"
Watch the Tools in Action
- Don't worry if you see lots of tool calls - that's normal and shows progress
- Each tool does one specific thing - like checking domains or uploading files
- Tool calls happen fast - your site will be live within minutes
- You can ask questions about what any tool is doing
Additional Tips
- Think Mobile-First: Your site will automatically work on phones, but mention if you have specific mobile priorities
- Start Simple, Then Expand: It's easier to begin with a solid foundation and add features than to build everything at once
- Use Reference Points: "Think Airbnb's design but for restaurants" or "Modern like Stripe's site but friendlier"
Sample Conversation Starters
For Business
"I'm launching a marketing consultancy for small businesses. I need a professional site that builds trust but doesn't feel corporate. Key pages: services, case studies, about me, and contact. I want potential clients to see me as an expert but approachable partner. Before we begin, do you have any questions?"
For Creative Work
"I'm a ceramic artist who sells at local markets and wants to go online. I need a site that showcases my pottery with a clean, earthy aesthetic. Must-haves: photo gallery of my work, my story, and how people can buy or commission pieces. Before we begin, do you have any questions?"
For Personal Projects
"I'm documenting my year-long journey learning to cook cuisines from around the world. I want a blog-style site where I can share recipes, photos, and stories. It should feel like a warm, inviting kitchen where friends gather. Before we begin, do you have any questions?"
For Redesigns or Inspiration
"I want to redesign my photography portfolio. I love the clean, minimal style of [URL] but want it warmer and more personal. My current site is [URL] - keep the gallery structure but make it more engaging. Before we begin, do you have any questions?"
